Surround sound consists of multiple channels of sound, as the name suggests spread around us on the wall and ceiling.
Surround sound delivers a cinematic experience. The idea behind it is to virtually transport you within the scene, so that you hear sounds as being heard by the artists in the particular movie scene. Unfortunately, with our viewing experience not being immersive, it does get difficult for the audience to experience the virtual immersion in its true sense. The visual and aural senses do not connect to the immersion with similar sincerity. I must admit that an immersive sound experience elevates our movie experience when compared to stereo sound reproduction.
The various formats of surround sound is represented as A.B.C where A represents the number of loudspeakers around us in horizontal plane, B represents the number of sub-woofers and C represents the number of overhead channels recreating aerial sounds. A 7.2.2 channel consists of Left, Centre, Right channels (3) in the front, Rear Surrounds L&R (2), Side Surrounds L&R (2) (3+2+2 = 7) with twin sub-woofer (2) and 2 overhead/height channels L&R (2).
